STOP Stressing! It's Ruining Your Skin

The Impact of Stress on Your Skin: Tips for Managing Stress in Your Daily Life

Stress is an inevitable part of our lives, and it affects us in many ways.

One of the most commonly overlooked effects of stress is its impact on our skin. Stress can cause a range of skin problems, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.

In this article, we’ll talk about the impact of stress on your skin and give you some tips for managing stress in your daily life to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

How Stress Affects Your Skin

When you are under stress, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol triggers the production of sebum, which is the oil that contributes to acne. It also weakens your skin's natural barrier, making it more vulnerable to irritants and allergens.

This means your skin can’t do it’s main function, protecting you!

But when the stress is internal, it can lead to a range of skin problems, including:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rosacea
  • Hives
  • Itching
  • Rashes
  • And More!

Managing stress can be challenging.

You’re probably thinking, where do I even start?!

But stress management is essential for maintaining good overall health, including healthy skin. Learn how to better manage stress with these tips!

Practice Self-Care

Taking time for yourself can help reduce stress and improve your mood. Engage in activities that you enjoy, such as reading, listening to music, or taking a relaxing bath.

Sometimes finding time for yourself can seem impossible. But you have to be a priority! Without a balanced mind, it will always feel like your world is crumbling. Take a step back and breathe, even if it is for just a moment.

Get Your Body Moving

Exercise can help reduce stress levels and improve your overall mood as a way for you to get rid of any built up tension in your body.

Try walking, dancing or even stretching, anything to get those limbs moving! It also helps to keep your skin healthy and glowing by increasing blood flow and oxygen to your entire body but most importantly the skin.

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness meditation and breathing exercises can help you manage stress by focusing your attention on the present moment. It can also help to reduce anxiety and improve your overall well-being.

If things feel like they are out of your control take a step back, breathe and focus on what you can do. Sometimes in an anxious state of mind we can pick, scratch or bite on our skin as a way to cope. Your skin doesn’t deserve that, and neither do you.

Get Enough Sleep

Have you really been resting? Lack of sleep can increase stress levels and exacerbate skin problems. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help your body rest and recharge. Try to decompress before bed, give your body and mind a break from your phone and other stressors if you can.

Stress does not define you or your life. You just have to have more tools in your toolbox for dealing with stress and in return your skin will thank you.
